CUSTODIAN
Definition
Under supervision, to keep an assigned school building or office space clean and orderly; and to do other work as required.
Essential Duties
1. Sweep, scrub, mop, wax and oil floors;
2. Vacuum rugs and carpets;
3. Dust and polish furniture and woodwork;
4. Empty and clean waste receptacles;
5. Clean restrooms;
6. Wash windows and walls; clean mini-blinds;
7. Polish metalwork;
8. Take care of equipment and material;
9. Clean and assist other employees in cleaning kitchens and cafeteria equipment;
10. Assist in moving and arranging furniture and equipment and setting up auditorium or classrooms for special events
or meetings;
11. Make minor non-technical repairs;
12. Replace lights;
13. Adjust shades, blinds, desks and other furniture;
14. Clean and pick up paper on grounds and courts;
15. Raise and lower flag;
16. Unlock and lock doors and gates.
(Incumbents of this class may be assigned to the wax crew whose major duties consist of moving furniture, mopping, waxing and buffing floors throughout the District.)
Qualifications
Knowledge of: Basic methods, supplies and tools used in custodial work.
Ability to:
1. Quickly learn the schedules, procedures and tools used in custodial work;
2. Work well with those contacted in the course of the work, and a willingness to cooperate with faculty and other workers;
3. Perform general custodial and simple maintenance work;
4. Use common electrical cleaning equipment;
5. Perform heavy manual labor; and
6. Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Experience: Previous experience performing duties similar to those listed above is highly desirable.
License: Valid California Driver's License.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on to ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 pounds such as salt and bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
